What is Food Waste?

Food waste is any food that is not eaten and is thrown away instead. This could be peelings from vegetables, bones from a roast chicken or scraps of uneaten food. It could even be whole loaves of bread or packs of manufactured food like ready-meals, biscuits or yogurts. Although food waste is recycled in most of Devon, it is better to reduce food waste than recycle, by not buying or cooking too much.

A lot of food in the UK is thrown away before it even gets to your plate because it has gone mouldy, or has gone past its sell by date, or because it didn’t look normal so isn’t sold in the supermarket (wonky veg).
