Kong’s Machine

By Thomas (age 9)

Kong was a gorilla in Banana Town. Here is a picture of him.

He was very scary and nobody liked him. When he approached Gary the Goat, Gary ran away!
When he met Pongo the Parrot, Pongo flew away.

Kong was very annoyed. He let out a roar that shook the ground and shouted, “Why is everyone
so scared of me!”

At his house, Kong had an idea. “What if I hypnotise them into liking me?” he wondered.
And so he started building a hypnotising machine.

He looked for recycling all over banana town. Hmmmm. Would a recycled can work? Yes, that
would be perfect! An old motor? The best. An old ugly man? Not so sure.

Kong looked day and night until he finally found enough pieces to make his hypnotising
machine.

This is where he found most of his recycling.

He worked for hours deciding which pieces went where until he could build the machine.
It was very hard, but he got it done in the end. It looked amazing when it was finished. This is
his machine:

Kong was very happy that he’d built this machine. “Now I can hypnotise them!” he exclaimed
elatedly. He came out of his house and looked around. “I can see Tom the Tiger!” he said.
“Hey, Tom,” Kong shouted. Tom turned around and at that moment, Kong zapped him with the
hypnotising machine and said, “you will tell the other animals that I am a very nice gorilla.”
“Yes master,” said Tom in a droopy voice.

From then on everyone liked Kong.

But Kong spotted that something wasn’t right. “Everyone’s acting like robots. Why?”
He realised that his hypnotising machine had made them behave like that.

He wanted to make it stop. He wanted his friends to actually like him.

He threw the hypnotising machine in the bin. But the story doesn’t end there…

A tiny voice whispered, “Split it up and put it in the recycling bin, please.”

Kong looked around, “Who are you?” he questioned.

A mouse scampered out of a corner. “It’s me, Harold the Mouse.”

“I’m surprised that you’re not scared of me.” Kong said, bewildered. “Do you want to be
friends?”

“Why not? Shall I help you separate your recycling?” Harold squeaked.

“Yes, please. Thank you!” And they started separating the glass from the plastic, and the paper
from the cardboard. Kong was happy to discover that he found it fun. Harold was too.

Now, whenever Kong goes out onto the street to sort his recycling, he has a chat with other
animals. Through recycling, he has made lots of friends. Kong is very nice to his friends and, in
turn, his friends are nice to him.
