In June, the waste education team takes a trip to the beach!
Our waste education beach day is a fun way to educate several classes about plastic pollution, take some climate action and have fun too! Every year we host 4 days of fun and hopefully sunny beach trips.
This year the team hosted trips to Exmouth Beach for schools from Newton Abbot, Moretonhampstead and Exeter. And we were joined by the team from National Coastwatch who delivered activities around water safety.
If you want to join us next year then book online: https://zone.recycledevon.org/portfolio-item/beach-days/
The activities are split into various sessions such as…
Litter picking
Students all take part in a beach clean. Each young person has a litter picker and hi-vis and walk the beach searching for litter. It’s full of surprising finds!
Beach Art
Pupils use items found on the beach to make impactful beach art with a message.
Sustainable fishing game
This activity aims to teach about the dangers of overfishing and microplastics in fish. Students play a game using different types of fishing gear to take fish from the “ocean” (a paddling pool filled with toy fish!).
After the children have finished the sustainable game, they discuss what they can do to help stop overfishing, like looking for the certified sustainable food MSC label on packaging.
The dangers of beach litter is discussed too. Check out this interesting article on Nurdles – Zone (recycledevon.org), something we often find in the fish we eat!
All in all it’s a grand day with lots of fun and learning.
